Great sleep makes you productive, energetic, mentally sharp and ready for a full day.
Lack of quality sleep can have some seriously adverse effects on your health, as well as making you irritable and slow.
To get the deep restorative sleep your body needs is going to take a well-planned strategy. You might not get it right first time and may need to experiment a little with the tips below.
Tip No. 1 – Keep It Regular
You need to find out how much sleep you need. Set a time for bed. Go at the same time every night. You should wake at the same time each day – naturally. If you need an alarm then try going to bed slightly earlier until you find your sleep time.
Tip No. 2 – Make Your Routine
Take a little time for yourself and create a routine you follow every night before bed. This can be a 15 min short routine, say a chapter of a book, or you can go full out with a long bath with calming music and candles. Don’t include loud noise, music that gets you going or anything with a screen. No phone, TV or computer – turn them all off!
Tip No. 3 – Food, Exercise, Smoking
Eat your main meal earlier in the evening. Avoid alcohol and cut out caffeine after lunchtime. Quit smoking – it causes sleep disruption and withdrawal symptoms make it hard to sleep as the night moves on.
Tip No. 4 – Relax, De-Stress
Relaxation techniques are beneficial for everyone. Try practicing deep, deliberate, slow breathing for 5 minutes once you’re ready to sleep. A good alternative is progressive muscle relaxation. Simply start at your toes, tense them and then relax. Work from your toes all the way to your head.
